The film in question is Memento.

I loved and was engaged by Memento so much that I proceeded to see it several more times in the theater and then immediately purchased it on DVD months later. To this day, I still think about it a lot and continue to admire it upon each viewing.

Memento is the story of Leonard, a former insurance claims investigator, who suffers from anterograde amnesia caused by what he believes was an attack on him and his wife that resulted in her death. This means that although he has a full understanding of who he is and most of his past, he cannot create new memories since the incident. As a result, he’s living in a fog of confusion and develops bizarre systems to help him manage his life while trying to identify and exact revenge on his wife’s killer.

Writer and director Christopher Nolan — known much better subsequently for the recent Batman trilogy and for Inception — creatively and unconventionally tells this fascinating story in two threads. The viewer slowly realizes that one thread is telling the “current” story of his investigation using scenes that are in reverse-chronological order. In other words, the first scenes we witness are actually the “final” scenes of the story. The other thread includes flashbacks that are in correct chronological order that give viewers insight into Leonard’s past as an insurance agent. This type of storytelling forces viewers to live in a confusing and clouded reality similar to the protagonist’s that requires us to act as skeptical investigators trying to solve a puzzle just like Leonard has to do.

Not only does Memento require audiences to pay close attention to every small detail and cause viewers to think about the movie incessantly, it also poignantly addresses existential themes of identity, loss, revenge, delusion, and the meaning of living. Guy Pearce’s portrayal of Leonard is remarkable, as are the supporting performances of Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano.

Memento may not be the most obvious choice for “best movie ever,” but it certainly is the most thoughtful and memorable films I’ve ever seen, and therefore my favorite movie.

Cinema lovers can look back to the genres of their choice whether crime, war movies, romantic dramas, comedies and more, and they are unlikely to be disappointed by what’s on offer. Not only did classic cinema lay the groundwork for much of what we enjoy in movies today, but certain genres of film like film noir of the 1940s and 1950s, the screwball comedies of the 1930s and western classics are unmatched today for quality.

Classic cinema is absolutely making a comeback as evidenced by the fact that classic films are still released on DVD and classic film channels thrive. These movies have much to offer that many modern films have lost.

For all of you that don’t know what scream queen means, it is a leading female actress that has become well known through her acting in a horror movie. There have been hundreds and hundreds of horror movies over the past fifty years, but let’s take a look at some of the best scream queens in the business from 1960 to 2000. Jamie Lee Curtis in the horror movie, Halloween, is a major scream queen. Ironically, Curtis was the daughter of Psycho movie star, Janet Leigh. Another model for the scream queen genre is Neve Campbell who starred in the movie, The Craft and became a top class screamer in the movie, I Know What You Did Last Summer. Sarah Michelle Gellar is another scream queen who was also in I Know What You Did Last Summer and starred in the television movie series, Buffy The Vampire Slayer. In recent times, Sheri Moon Zombie wins the prize for scream queen. Not only a scream queen but a leading lady villain. She carries the sword and the scream making her one of the most powerful scream queens in the movie industry.

Perhaps a few can qualify. Denzel Washington is a good example. With a body of work both eclectic and elegant Denzel Washington carries a quiet actor quality of old Hollywood stardom. His roles are set in a range of box office grandiose, like “American Gangster” and character driven like “Pelham 123.”

Scarlett Johansson is an actress with the possibility of becoming an iconic movie star. From the start a noticeable beauty she has grown into acting feats such as “A Love Song for Bobby Long”, “Lost in Translation and “Ghost World.”

A blending of film presence, acting ability and off beat beauty isn’t enough if the drive and purpose aren’t present on screen and off.

Emma Stone is a fresh new face in the film industry. Her quirky looks, adorable smile, and addictive laugh make her a true star. With a head of hair as hot as fire, this redhead sets the bar high for upcoming actresses. Emma Stone’s personality shows through each role she portrays. The star of Easy A, The Help, and Zombie Land; her personality lights fires through the hearts of her fans. With a new look, Emma does not fit into the typical ‘celebrity beauty’. Emma Stone could be easily described as the most beautiful actress in the film industry. Her stunning fiery locks set her apart form her acting counterparts, as does her stunning smile. Emma Stone is not only a beautiful girl, but one of the most skilled actresses. She portrays her dialogue, and character as a skilled actress who has been in the business for decades. With under 10 films under her belt since 2005, Stone is certainly breaking out with 4 films in post-production. As she grew into a beautiful woman, her true potential as a stunning actress showed through. Not only is she one of the most beautiful actresses throughout time, she is skilled in her work.

1. Flags of Our Fathers (2006): Directed by Clint Eastwood, this WWII film tells the story of the 6 service men who raised the flag on Mt. Suribachi, an act which was photographed and became one of the most famous pictures in America. Only three of the six survived the rest of the battle and went on to become American heroes.
2. 300 (2006): Reaching a little farther back in the history books, this is the story of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC when a small, but courageous army of 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians are met by a Persian fleet of over 100,000 soldiers with the orders to take Greece. Though their defeat is inevitable, the Spartans wage one of the most heroic and determined fights in history, which happens to make for an incredible movie plot.
3. We Were Soldiers (2002): Starring Mel Gibson as Lt. Col. Hal Moore, this film tells the painful yet inspiring story of the soldiers sent into the first battle of Vietnam. With a promise to be the first on and off the battlefield, Moore is a dedicated and noble leader to these brave men.
4. Enemy At the Gates (2001): This historical thriller about the battle of Stalingrad during WWII, tells the story through the eyes of a soldier from each side. A sniper from Germany and a sniper from Russia each battle to defend their country as well as their own personal honor.
5. Black Hawk Down (2001): Directed by Ridley Scott and based on a bestseller, this is the story of a less-known, more undercover operation. Josh Hartnett and Ewan McGregor star in this film about a group of U.S. Special Forces tasked with capturing Somalian war lords. When the mission starts to unravel, the success of this mission rests in the hands of these brave determined rangers.
6. Hotel Rwanda (2004): An inspiring, true story about one man’s attempt to save lives during the brutal massacre of Rwanda. Neglected by the rest of the world, this country was left to face the unspeakable atrocities brought on by domestic terrorism. Don Cheadle plays the role of Paul Rusesabagina who uses his hotel to house thousands of Tutsi refugees who are struggling to escape the Hutu militia.
7. The Patriot (2000): Another Mel Gibson hit, this is the story of Revolutionary War Hero, Benjamin Martin, who fights alongside his son Gabriel (Heath Ledger). With his home burned and his family threatened, Martin leads a militia to fight the tyrannical British.
8. Letters from Iwo Jima (2006): Another Clint Eastwood film about the battle of Iwo Jima, in this film we see this historic battle through the eyes of the Japanese. This Oscar-winning film makes you rethink all your preconceived notions about this unforgettable battle of WWII.
9. Jar Head (2005): Based on Anthony Swofford’s auto-biographical account of his time spent as a marine in Saudi Arabia prior to Desert Storm. The strain of intense boredom followed immediately by an unbelievable rush of adrenaline and the struggle of these boys face as they fight in a land they don’t understand, gives us a glimpse into the tolls modern warfare take on our soldiers.
10. Gladiator (2000): Though unconventionally placed into this category, Gladiator is the story of a true soldier who fights to avenge the deaths of his family members who were killed as a result of his being chosen as heir to the Roman Empire. This movie will make the top ten lists of many other genres including action and historical and we think it belongs in this one too.
